Whether it's drawing a fortune stick at a temple in Taipei or shaking a bamboo cylinder at a shrine in Kyoto, the form differs but the impulse is the same: in a moment of uncertainty, we look for a little guidance and comfort from something larger than ourselves.
A Legend Passed Down by Word of Mouth
The legend of Mt. Fuji Gohshingu isn't recorded in any official archive. Like the origin story of most shrines and temples, it has traveled quietly from person to person: a shrine said to appear only in the brief moment the clouds part at the summit of Mt. Fuji — visible only to those with a real bond to it.
What we wanted to do was give this word-of-mouth legend a complete home online for the first time, rather than simply borrow the format of some real shrine's fortunes: most "digital omikuji" today just move the drawing step online and still hand you a physical paper slip at the end. This digital ritual includes the fortune itself, a wishing pool to tie your hopes to, and a knot on the bond-tying branch — all of it, from anywhere.
Why This Matters for Anyone Far From Home
If you live overseas, it's not always possible to fly back for a temple visit during Qingming or New Year. Distance shouldn't stand between you and a moment of ritual. Mt. Fuji Gohshingu's 33 fortunes are written in Japanese, Chinese, and English side by side, so wherever you are, you can take part in this legend.
